Cala d'Or belongs to the municipality of Santanyí. The main centers of the resort are Cala d'Or with the adjacent areas of Cala Egos and Cala Ferrera.

The rugged cliffs are interspersed with many small sandy coves such as Cala Serena, Cala Ferrera, Cala Esmeralda, the largest beach in the resort, Cala Gran, as well as the namesake Cala d'Or, Cala d'es Forti, Cala Galera and Cala Egos. A small road regularly takes vacationers to the various beaches in summer. The town center is very lively in the summer months, but not as crowded as other tourist centers in Mallorca. There are a large number of stores, bars and restaurants in the pedestrian zone. The Porto Cari marina in the bay of Cala Llonga offers exclusive yachts and charter boats alike moorings and protection from storms, as well as a large number of restaurants and bars.

In keeping with Mediterranean tradition, many buildings in Cala d'Or are painted white and their flat design is in keeping with the cubic Ibiza style. This is no coincidence, as the Ibizan architect Josep Costa Ferrer, who planned the town in the early 1930s, was inspired by his homeland.

The next larger town inland is Santanyí. The original fishing port of Portopetro can be reached in five minutes by car. The double bay of Cala Mondragó, located in a nature reserve not far away, is recommended for a long day at the beach.
